There are many factors which can influence the fertility of a cow and/or heifer. Some of these include:
- Environmental factors: the weather can play a big part on a cow/heifers mood
- Vitamins and minerals: Proper nutrition is necessary for good reproductive performance. Balanced amounts of protein and energy are required for the physical activity associated with breeding. Adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals are also important in reproduction.
- Body condition: Structural soundness, including functional feet, legs, hips, shoulders and associated joints, is critical for the cow to be able to carry a calf.
- Genetics: some bloodlines may have lower fertility rates or inbreeding may alter the success of fertility
- Diseases: diseases and deficiencies may affect a cow/heifers ability to carry a calf or become pregnant at all
